As writers, we have our own prejudices and personal beliefs. Yet, few seem to ever ask how this might affect how and what we write. Few seem to reflect on the words our characters might say or the types of characters we attempt to create.

The questions I deal with are:

a) What is political correctness? b) How does race/racism affect our storytelling? c) Does an editor’s personal prejudices affect hiring practices? d) How do we conceive of women as characters?

The best way to deal with these issues is through honest dialogue and self-reflection.

Nice podcast man. I completely agreed with what you said. ONe thing i could never stand was all these so called ethnic characters written by someone you can tell never experienced anything first hand. Some who you could tell was faking it, or just writing a character to use offense as shock value just to sell an issue. I even agree with what you said about female characters. How in a comic with a huge battle going on the male character is fully clothed and usually in full body armor of some kind, while the female is usually in a micro bikini and stiletto pumps do martial arts, full splits, and cartwheels down the street.
